Phases: A Found Poetry Journey

Book pages, a pair of scissors, and an open heart. That’s all it takes.

Found poetry is one of those creative practices that seems almost magical, or at the very least mysterious. It’s simple, accessible, and requires very few materials, but uniquely taps into our deeper self, our subconscious, our soul with words that are not ours but become ours simply by listening.

When is the last time you listened like that?

We typically go about our days by rote, doing what needs to be done, asleep to the inner workings of the Spirit. There is no judgment in this. Life is just this way. But as we pay attention, as we pray in the most simple of definitions, moment by moment, it becomes easier to leave the surface of our lives and dwell more deeply. This different way of living life takes practice, and it is good and holy work.

I have found myself more and more drawn to cycles and seasons as I age. No longer much interested in pursuing and achieving and acquiring, I spend time with my breath, listen to the changing sounds of the year, and marvel as I watch the moon again and again– reborn, expanding, leaving, gone.

My life with God is much the same. Push and pull, abundance and loss, light and darkness– the seasons and cycles of my soul mirror those of nature, and I feel more and more at home with God when I embrace these rhythms instead of resist them.

I want to explore these movements with you, in community, with creative and prayerful practices that bring us together and illuminate the path forward. My vision includes real-time sharing and side-by-side creating, meeting on Zoom so that geography is not a barrier; it includes email reflections from my heart to yours, as I too engage the questions of rhythm and cycle, what is blooming and what needs to go. And finally, it includes a closing Zoom retreat of sharing and naming– our found poems, yes, but also the uncovered layers of joy and sorrow that have found a voice through the month of our journey.

Will you join me?
